The impressive history of the mighty Rajput kingdom ‘Jaisalmer’ dates back to the 12th century.

It was claimed that Jaisalmer Rajputs were decedents of Yaduvanshi, who ruled Rajasthan.

In the 12th century, Rawal Jaisal was crowned as the prince of Lodurva. Even though he seized power in his own rights, he feared the conflicts that would arise from his half-brother who had an equal right to the throne.

To secure the kingdom, Jaisal sought to move his capital to a much-secluded place away from his enemies sight. In the due course, the prince met hermit sage Eesul who informed Jaisal regarding the prophecy of Lord Krishna. And that only a descendant of the lunar clan will rule the kingdom.

This boosted the confidence of the price as he belongs to the Chandra dynasty. And so, Rawal Jaisal in 1156 constructed a mud fort and named it after him as “Jaisalmer”.

Over the period of time the city has constantly endured various battles and wars but fortunately was preserved from the conflicts of Muslim invaders in 13th and 14th.

The reason being that the city is located deep in the city. Thus difficult to invade and also the Rawals paid their tribute to the Delhi sultanate each year. It was a measure to maintain a strong relationship with them.

The main attraction of the city was that it was the centre of spice trading; the route connected the path from India to Persia, Egypt, Africa and also a handful of countries in the west.

The opening of the Mumbai’s port in the 18th Century was the reason for the major setback for this trading city.
